North Belfast Harriers Race Report 24th – 30th August

Silver and Bronze for Davey Clarke at World Masters Championships

Davey Clarke ran a great race on Tuesday 25th August to lift bronze in the World Masters 800m in South Korea. As the heatwave continued and further government health warnings were issued, Davey turned out at 9.30 am to run in the “relatively mild” temperature of 29c to qualify as first finisher in his heat in 2min: 34.93sec. As the mercury rose to 33c at 4.40pm, Davey crossed the line in 3rd place in the final in 2:20.29, over 3 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

On Thursday 27th August, Davey then lifted a second medal, this time silver in the 5000m. As the oppressive humidity and heat persisted, and the government issued a further alert, warning against outdoor activities, Davey put his toe to the line in the M65 race at Gyeongsan Civic Stadium. Running against formidable opposition, including the current world record holder from the USA, Davey ran an intelligent race from the start, letting the early breakaway runners go, but sitting on the shoulder of many people’s favourite for the race. In the final stages of the race, with the pace and conditions taking their toll, and as two runners stepped of the track, Davey, in fourth place stepped up the pace, first dropping the American and then overtaking the South Korean, who had been in second place for most of the race. Davey crossed the line in 18:25.56 to claim a well deserved silver.

Also competing in Korea was Joe Gallagher, who competed in 2 events, firstly the 10k, taking 13th place in the M65 category in 47:39. Then on Sunday Joe competed in the half marathon. Joe finished the race in 1:43:33. Running down 3 age groups to complete a team for Ireland, Joe was the 2nd scoring member home in the “M45” team. He finished in 367th place overall, 15th in the M65 category. Over 1,200 runners finished the men’s race, which started and finished near the picturesque location of Suseongmot Lake, in Deagu. It was an out and back course. The race was run in oppressive humidity, exacerbated by the thunder, lightning and torrential rain that the athletes encountered en route to the start. The race started at 7.00am. Although the temperatures did not reach the highs of the preceding week, running in humidity, in the mid-high 20s certainly made the event interesting. The M45 Irish team finished 5th.

Bark, Set, Go as Mark Smith wins the Rosie’s Trust Charity 5k, Sunday 30th August

Rosie’s Trust is the only charity in Northern Ireland dedicated to caring for people by caring for their pets. Sunday saw their latest fundraiser, a charity 5k on the Loughshore for runners with or without their dogs ! Mark Smith was the first home in the Male Solo category (i.e. he had no dog although it is unclear if this was an advantage or a disadvantage!), Mark’s time was 19:15.

Portrush 5 Mile Road Race, Friday 28th August

Two harriers made the trip to the North Coast on Friday evening for this one. The route was an out and back which started on the East Strand in Portrush before negotiating the climb up to the road then heading towards Portstewart and the turn for home. Congratulations to Chris Hutchinson who took the win in a speedy 27:22. The results were:

Strangford Gala 10k, Friday 28th August

Rathlin Run 10m/5k Saturday 28th August

The Rathlin Run, consisting of the original 10m race along with a more recently introduced 5km option took place on Saturday with 6 harriers taking the ferry over to take part. Their results were:

Hardman Killarney Full Distance Triathlon, Saturday 29th August

Starting with a swim in the lakes of Killarney before cycling the full length of the Ring of Kerry with glorious views along the Wild Atlantic Way, followed by a full marathon through Killarney National Park this was definitely not one for the faint hearted. Sam Carr claimed a fine second place overall in a total time of 9:18:35, which included a marathon time of 3:03:59.
