NORTH BELFAST HARRIERS JUNIOR REPORT 14-20TH AUGUST 2023

The Junior Report makes a stunning comeback after a few quiet summer months and a recruitment drive which now means that we have 8 authors. This is fantastic news and it should secure this report for the foreseeable future. Thanks to everyone who stepped up.

The summer is drawing to a close and our juniors will soon be back at school. However, more important than this, is that the Cross Country XC season is beginning soon (more about that later). Training is also back every Tuesday and Thursday night and our coaching team have issued a training plan so that our juniors can achieve their full potential.

Fab 5 – Mary Peters Track

Thursday evening brought us the final track session of the year. We had some great performances but surely the highlight was young Mason coming 3rd in the U11 800m. What a great result for him along with some great performances for our other juniors who came along.

Well done to Ryan Nulty for his first event today. He ran the fun run at the Storming the Castle Run in Carrickfergus.

Summer Highlights

Even though there were not many big events or races over the summer, some of our juniors did take part in runs and had some great achievements.

Congratulations to all our runners who took part in the Junior League and who attended the summer schemes at Mary Peters Track. They had great fun at the summer scheme and got to try out other events such as javelin, hurdles, orienteering and much more.

Special mention to Eoin McConnell who ran the Scrabo Hill Race, finishing in 31:58 (3rd place male junior).

Cormac Leheny, Dualta McGleenan and Eoin McConnell raced in the Rathmullan 5K. Some very fast times with Eoin coming over the line at 17:31 and Cormac smashing the 19 barrier with 18:39.

Thomas Coy and Eimear Coy ran in the juvenile races at the Carlingford 5K with Thomas taking home first place and taking a very nice trophy home with him.

Congratulations to Holly Collins who took an amazing 8th place in the All Ireland U17 Girls 3000m with a PB of 11:01.

Finally, well done to Saul Thompson who had a great summer, qualifying for the All Irelands in Tullamore and achieving a new PB with a fantastic time of 53.52 and 7th place. He went and shaved some more off this at Mary Peters Track a few weeks later with a 53.42.

Very Important Races for the Club

There are only a few days left to enter the kids’ 1 mile race as part of the Laganside 10K. We have already got good numbers but if you haven’t signed up, then please do so asap.

There are two very important Cross Country XC races which our club pay for and expect maximum participation. There will be more details about these in the coming weeks but the dates are 21 October and 5 November.

The club has recently re-introduced the participation medal where our runners will be awarded points for running in certain races. The picture of the medal is below.

Training continues this week on Tuesday and Thursday.
