Florencecourt Last One Standing, Saturday 20th June

Veteran Harrier, Greg McClure was part of the Ireland team competing in the Home Nations International Backyard Ultra (BYU) race at the weekend.

Incorporating the Home Nations BYU championships for 2026. around 130 runners toed the line on Saturday at noon, including 10-person teams from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. In a BYU the runners negotiate one 4.167 mile loop per hour, attempting to complete as many loops as possible, and the race continues until there is only 1 runner left. The course at Florencecourt was a mixture of trails and forest paths with about 90m ascent per loop, the shade in the forest being welcome relief in the sunny conditions.

Experienced BYU runner Greg McClure represented team Ireland and completed 16 loops (66.67 miles), timing out by just a few seconds at the end of his 16th loop. At time of writing (9am Monday), the race was still ongoing with 3 runners on their 46th loop; the Home Nations trophy looking destined for Scotland for the 3rd successive year, with England 2nd. Ireland 3rd and Wales in 4th.

Four Harriers made their way to Dublin on Sunday morning, for the second in a series of three Irish Championship races held in Phoenix Park over the summer. The weather was perfect, in the early morning sunshine, as nearly 1500 runners lined up in three waves for the start of the race, with those competing for the Athletics Ireland Championship assembled in the first wave. By the time the first of the athletes were crossing the finishing line, the temperature had begun to rise, as had the performance of the runners. Eamon White ran a superb race to finish in 27 min: 41 sec, lifting Gold in his age category, 30th overall. Meanwhile Carol and April Clarke finished 6th in their respective categories, with Joe Gallagher finishing 4th in his M65 category.
