North Belfast Harriers Race Report 12-18 May 2025

As the glorious weather continued this week the athletes of North Belfast Harriers continued to compete with great success in the mountains, on the road, on the coast and in the parks.

Lukes Hill & Dale

Race 6 of the popular Hill and Dale series took place on Thursday evening. Starting at Meelmore Lodge the runners tackled a 4.5-mile route that summited Slievenaglogh (586m) and Lukes (391m). Three Hill and Dale regulars from NBH took part, all running well in the warm conditions with Conor Doris claiming 2nd place in the M40 category. Full results were:

Maguiresbridge 5 Miler

Conán McCaughey who won this race last year in a course record of 25:41 ran even quicker this year to take a fine win in Maguiresbridge on Friday evening. Conán dominated the race from the start to cross the line 4 minutes ahead of the runner up and set the new course record at 25:18.

Born2Run Coast Half Marathon and 10k

A new race on the calendar this year, conditions were warm for this one on Saturday morning. The spectacular route started in Killough, then headed out to St John’s lighthouse, then via Tyrella and back to Killough. There were harriers competing in both races; the results in the half marathon were:

Irish Runner Athletics Ireland Championship 5k

There was wall to wall sunshine in Phoenix Park, Dublin on Saturday morning and some shining examples of how to run a 5k race in the heat. Davey Clarke romped home in 1st place in his M65 category, in the phenomenal time of 17m47s, almost two minutes ahead of his nearest category rival. Mark Smith, a new member of the club running his first race in a North Belfast vest, finished 4th in his M55 category in 17m02s. Joe Gallagher finished in 20m59s, 5th in the M65 category. Ireland Masters Athletics Association Awards Dinner

Members of North Belfast Harriers were prominent at the Annual Awards Dinner of the Northern Ireland Masters Athletics Association, held in Millard Restaurant in Belfast, on Saturday evening. Awards were presented for the first three athletes, male and female, in each age category in the winter league of cross country and road races, as well as prizes for overall male and female athletes of the year.

Congratulations to David Clarke, who lifted the award for Male Athlete of the Year for 2024. Also congratulations to Brian Stewart, who lifted the prize for first place in the M70 category in the winter league; to new member Mark Smith, who was first in the M55 category and to Laurence Johnston, who took second place in the M65 category.
