North Belfast Harriers Junior Report 5-11th May 2025

The Ulster Schools District events continued this week, at both Mary Peters and Antrim Forum, where sunglasses were recommend for the new and very bright blue track – although with the continued good weather shades were required anyway.

With the majority of our secondary school runners having competed the previous week in District B we seemingly had only 2 runners competing, with Mason running in the minor 800m race at Antrim Forum and Cillian running in the Minis 800m at Mary Peters, and with a superb 1st place Cillian will now join many more of our Juniors at the All Ulster Schools Championships being held this coming Wednesday and Saturday – good luck to all competing !!

The annual Belfast Irish Milers Meet was also held at Mary Peters at the weekend, and although this is a predominantly national senior event the Harriers were represented in both the boys and girls junior 1000m events which kick started the day of high level senior running.

With the boys split into two races the Harriers claimed second places in both, with Cormac Leheney recording a fast time of 2.48.93 in the first race and Thomas Coy being pipped at the post for first place in a time of 2.49.67 in the second race.  Also in the first race we had Sion McAllister finish in 7th in 3.09.23 and in 9th young Isaac Mooney raced over in 3.27.92. Great running and a great experience for all !

Two Harrier girls competed together in the 1000m race and a very fast and close finish saw our own Cassie Curran continuing her fine form and just hitting the tape first in a time of 3.00.78. Leila Jones rounded off the junior Harriers morning of running in 5th place in a time of 3.08.14.  Fine running from both and a great warm up for them ahead of the All Ulsters on Wednesday !

As usual the Harriers were strongly represented by many of our youngsters at the Waterworks Parkruns over the weekend, with PBs achieved in both the 5km and 2km runs.  So special mentions to Annie Cullen who ran a PB in the 5km on Saturday and to Jessica Murray, Sophia Kielty, Ronan O’Neil and Lucy Dickson who ran PBs on Sunday over the 2km course.  Great achievements by you all !!

In addition, over at Victoria Park on Saturday Eva McLoughlin also hit a PB time of 28.21 in the 5km run – well done Eva !
