NBH Race Report, 5th – 11th Aug 2024

A very busy, but rewarding week for the Harriers. They picked up many podium places and returned very superb times.

Wed 7th Aug 2024, Crawfordsburn 5k Trail Race

This race follows an undulating trail that is a mixture of gravel, tarmac and grass paths that weave around the scenic country park and along the coastal path.

Two Harriers represented the club and returned excellent times.

Fri 9th Aug 2024, Last One Standing

This tough event is on a 4.2 mile route around the paths and forests of Florence Court. Flat at the start then a climb up through the trees to the halfway point then downhill the whole way to the finish.

Runners have one hour to complete the lap. Each lap starts on the hour every hour and if a runner doesn’t finish inside the hour they’re out. Only fully finished laps count.

Greg McClure took part in the race and completed an incredible 15 loops. Well done Greg.

Fri 9th Aug 2024, The Mallusk 5 Mile Road Race

Notorious for the “killer mile”, the Mallusk 5 mile road race presents a challenge to athletes, but that didn’t stop over 20 North Belfast Harriers from accepting that challenge.

It proved to be a very successful race. The ladies took all three podium positions, securing the Barista Bar Team Challenge. Great work ladies.

Young Eoin McConnell was the first Harriers home, taking the top spot for the juniors, finishing in 29:00. Well done Eoin.

Fri 9th & Sat 10th Aug 2024, NI & Senior Track & Field Championships

The Mary Peters Track was the venue for the NI & Senior Track & Field Championships held over two days.

Seven Harriers completed in three distances – 1500m, 500m and 10,000m,  while Darragh Andrews competed in the Long Jump event. Conán MCCAUGHEY picked up gold in the 10,000m.

Andrew Milligan recorded an impressive win at the British Milers meet at Bury, Manchester. Andrew ran 1500m in 3:46.90. Well done Andrew.

Sat 10th Aug 2024, Dambusters 10k

Organised by Born 2 Run, these races held at the Silent Valley Reservoir are firm favourites with runners. Declan Liggett represented the Club and finished with a time of 39:37, coming a fantastic 5th place out of 352 runners. Well done Declan.

Sat 10th Aug 2024, Lurig Challenge Run

The Lurig Challenge Run is the highlight of the Heart of the Glens Festival. Participants are guaranteed an exciting off-road race, breathtaking views and a famously warm Glens welcome.

The 3.8 mile race starts in the main street of Cushendall adjacent to the Curfew Tower. After a short dash up the spectator lined main street, there is a sharp incline and a set of steps up the Stony Lonan, followed by a mile long farm track to the base of the mountain. Next comes an assault to the top of Lurig (1073 feet), with spectacular views, before a fast descent down the mountain, back along the farm track for the sprint to the village and the finish.

Five Harriers took part and produced some remarkable results. Philip Goss took third position overall and 1st in his age category, while Aodh Rafferty did the same in the U20 category.

Well done to all in this challenging event.

A total of 81 North Belfast Harriers took part in 19 parkruns.

Well done to this week’s First Finisher: Cormac LEHENY (Buncrana parkrun), and to the three Lady First Finishers: Cassie CURRAN (Waterworks parkrun), Natasha HENDERSON (Antrim parkrun) and Holly COLLINS (Sixmilewater parkrun).

Congratulations to Eimear O’REGAN and Cormac LEHENY on achieving PBs.

No official milestones this week, but Michelle McLOUGHLIN clocked up 200 parkruns. Well done Michelle.
