NBH Race Report 9-15 January 2023

Cross country at Mallusk, Tollymore trails, indoors jumps and throws at UUJ and the Irish National Junior and U23 Indoor Championships at the National Indoor Arena in Dublin were all on the agenda this week.

National Junior and U23 Indoor Championships (Sat 14 Jan)

Congratulations to Róise Roberts who set a new club record of 4:45.21 in the heats of the Junior Women’s 1500m at the Irish Junior Championships. The performance also earned her an U20 silver medal.

UUJ Jumps and Throws (Sat 14)

At the University of Ulster, Jordanstown Darragh Andrews took a fine 3rd place in the Senior Women’s Long Jump with 3.46m beating her previous indoor best of 3.30m.

Born 2 Run Tollymore 5K/10K (Sat 14 Jan)

The club was represented by 3 athletes in the 10k on Saturday morning at the ever popular Born 2 Run event at Tollymore Forest. The route follows the forest path alongside the Shimna River in a gradual ascent past the Hermitage before returning to the Start/Finish area near the forest entrance. The results were:

Mallusk Cross Country – The Mathieson Cup (Sun 15 Jan)

The course was well muddy after the heavy rain during the week and proved it’s usual test of strength and stamina. The highlight of the men’s race was a fine win for Peter McGarry who headed the field home in 27:00, ably supported by John Black and Conal McCambridge who took 4th and 6th positions respectively. With a total of 9 finishers the men took 3rd place in the Mathieson Cup behind Willowfield and North Down.

Martsje Hell headed home the NBH ladies team and despite fine performances from all the members of the squad our total of 6 finishers meant we didn’t feature in the ladies team competition which requires a minimum of 7 finishers.

The male veterans ran with the ladies and Joe Gallagher was the first of our three vets home, taking 12th place overall.
