In baking hot conditions Marty Deane’s longstanding Belfast marathon record was smashed by Kenya’s Jacob Cheshire in a superfast 2:14:56. The harriers could boast their own winners too with Lisa Sturgeon first local female in 3:07 and Tommy Hughes first local male in 2:33. Edwards & Co Super Five Series

The second of the Edwards and Co series promoted by Laganvalley A.C. was held last Thursday. The series provides an opportunity for juniors to compete in track and field and to sample various events. North had six juniors competing in a variety of events. Damien Marquees ran well in the 600m and later competed in the shot. Conal McNicholl doubled up in the 160m and the mini shot. In the main event, top vet Mick Fitzpatrick will be looking for a good performance following some impressive races this Spring. Today, it seemed only the kenyans did NOT suffer from heat and dehydration, with Geoffrey Mutai and Mary Keitany setting world leading times in the 2011 Virgin London Marathon. Mutai’s time of of 2.04.40 took half a minute off the course record. With temperatures a cloudy 9 degrees at the start, it looked like today was going to see perfect racing conditions. There was an extra special buzz throughout the valleys of Connemara last weekend, as the 39.3 mile Ultra Marathoners, merged with the 26.2 mile Marathoners and the 2,000 strong field of brave Half Marathoners. Giant runners entertained the nervous participants at the start area of the Half Marathon, U2 blared and danced on the ‘devil’s mother’ just outside Leenane and devils goaded the runners up the ‘hell of the west’ and on to the finish at Maam Cross.
