North Belfast Harriers Report 30th March – 5th April 2026

As the Easter bank holiday weekend approached, Harriers felt in the mood for coastal challenges, indoor track racing and Parkruns in far-reaching locations. Let’s hop into the action.

European Masters Indoor Athletics Championships

Four Harriers journeyed to Toruń, Poland to compete with the best in Europe in their respective age categories across a range of races surrounding the main indoor championships.

David Clarke competed across three distances, and paved the path of success with impressive podium finishes in all three! He clinched a superb gold in the 3000m in a time of 10:32.78, and 2 silver medals in 1500m and 800m with times of 4:50.57 and 2:30.18 respectively. Conor Curran focused his efforts on 1500m, pipping his closest opponent to the line in a fiercely competitive M50 final, sealing a silver medal in the process with a time of 4:15.67. Congratulations to both Davy and Conor.

As the competition was hotting up indoors, competitors also lined up for a range of races staged adjacent to the stadium, including a 5km road race, which saw club runner Paul Blaney clock a swift 17:15 to contribute to the Irish M50 team claiming silver.

Additionally, Joe Gallagher represented in the 8k cross country race. On a dry and sunny day, the course was firm underfoot and consisted of challenging climbs through a woodland park. Sadly team withdrawals ruled out chances of medals, but Joe successfully completed the course in a great time of 37:50.

Ballyliffin Coastal Challenge – Saturday 4th April

This exhilarating, annual event invited runners to the scenic Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal. Promising ‘breathtaking coastal views, rugged landscapes, and a strong sense of community’, this unique event was well attended despite the inclement, stormy weather including snow showers!

Participants choose between a 7-mile course and 10-mile, with routes following picturesque paths and scenic coastal trails.

Kieran Quinn and Frances Stroud braved the conditions to complete the 7-mile challenge, with respective times of 1:07:31 and 1:28:12.

Thomas McLaughlin was the sole representative in the 10-mile route, completing this in 1:07:38. Great results all round!

Beragh 5 Mile Road Race – Saturday 4th April

Hosted by Beragh Red Knights, this annual fixture includes a 5 Mile Road Race and 5k walk/run, which takes participants through the picturesque Mid Tyrone countryside. Hundreds of runners and walkers took part this year, with Conor Fegan taking 2nd place in the 5 mile race in a brilliant time of 29:49. Well done Conor!

Parkrun

The bank holiday weekend encouraged a wide variety of locations for Parkrunning, from local seaside destinations, to more international events in Poland and Japan! As always, these runs simply would not be possible without the generosity of volunteers – thank you to all those who gave their time to make these happen.
