Ulster Schools – District B

It was the turn of our secondary school athletes on 1 May. It was a great day for running at Mary Peter’s Track and hundreds of pupils were there representing their schools in District B. District B includes all schools in South Antrim, Lisburn, Newtownabbey, Carrickfergus, Whitehead and the whole of Belfast west of the Lagan. The official results are not out yet so we are relying on eye witnesses from the events, reports from the parents and photographs of the results posted on the board at Mary Peters. Unfortunately, we were not able to capture everything, so all we can do is record what we have so far. Needless to say, the official results will be forthcoming in the next week or so. The top 3 athletes from each event should qualify for the Ulster Schools finals on 14 May but the rules can be complex so please check with the schools if it isn’t 100% clear. For sure, we will have a good few runners performing at this top provincial level.

Mini Girls & Boys:

Mini level is Year 8 (or first year). We had Nola, Eimear Coy, Erin, Tanoj and Cormac Carabine. Each one of these runners did themselves and their schools proud. Tanoj took 1st place in the 100m and Cormac took 1st place in the 800m with a fantastic last lap where he moved up from 3rd to win the race.

Minor Boys:

Year 9 was represented by both Lucas and Tom who are well used to running together, either in races or jogging round the Parkrun. Both the lads got impressive times for the 800m – well done to both.

Junior Girls & Boys:

This Year 10 group had the greatest number of NBH juniors participating. Leila, Daisy, Cassie, Erin, Ruarcc, Thomas Coy, Cormac Leheny and Leo were all running and representing their schools. Leila Jones and Cassie Curran proved that they can excel in both sprinting and middle distance events with Leila taking medals in the 75m hurdles and 1500m. Cassie also was on the podium for both the 200m and 800m races. Daisy took a fantastic 3rd place in the 100m. Well done to all the girls. The junior boys clearly prefer a few more laps with Ruarcc running a fantastic 800m race. Thomas and Cormac both ran a lightening fast 1500m, both in times that would win at Ulster level in most years, taking gold and silver. Finally, Leo took part in the 1500m walk which has its own styles and techniques which take a lot of getting used to. Congratulations to all our Junior juniors.

Congratulations to coach Gladys who was the 3rd lady in the Belfast City Marathon. What a great result and what a fantastic inspiration she is for the kids.

Congratulations also Katie-Louise Goodfellow who completed the marathon in a time of 4:31:27 which is a new assisted PB. Brilliant going.
