The unpredictable and at times inclement summer weather persisted through mid July. However, undeterred by the suboptimal summer, member of North Belfast Harriers turned out in force to run on the roads, the hills and at Parkruns throughout the country and abroad.
Portaferry 10 Mile Race, Tuesday 16th July
Derek and Katie-Louise Goodfellow, and Joe Gallagher ran in the Portaferry 10 mile Race on Tuesday evening. Starting and finishing in Portaferry, the runners were taken initially on a fast descent through the town and along the Strangford Lough seafront, before climbing through the undulating hills towards the scenic Irish Sea beaches and then back over the hills towards the town. Sea to Sky Challenge, Newcastle, Co Down, Friday 19th July
Friday evening saw six Harriers starting the scenic race along the seafront at Newcastle, climbing along the circumference of Slieve Donard towards Curraghard Summit, and then descending towards the finish on the shore. There were 5k and 10k race options, with five of the group opting for the 10k. Well done to all the runners, who finished an ever popular, scenic event, that is not without its challenges.

North Belfast Harriers Naked Run, Friday 19th July

Organised by the Harriers, the “Naked Run” is an event where runners complete a 5k race, without the aid of any timing device, and attempt to finish as close to the exact the time that they predict at the start of the race. To claim a modest cash prize, winners have to finish within 5 sec of their time prediction. A total of 17 runners competed on Friday evening, with James Trainor and Greg McClure finishing joint 1st, a mere 6 sec outside the 28:08 and 25:00 respectively that they predicted. John Casey was 2nd, only 8 sec outside his predicted time, while Conor Curran was 3rd, 11 sec outside the time that he had predicted. The other runners competing were: Paddy McCambridge, Brendan McCambridge, Mark Brookes, Joanne Curran, Paul Manton, Debbie McConnell, Stephen McCullough, Nola Jamieson, Frances Stroud, Simon Reeve, Karen McLean, Gerry Anderson and Claire Curran. As none of the runners were able to claim the prize, the cash rolls over to the next event, as the tension rises!
ParkRuns, Saturday 20th July
The less than ideal summer weather brought cooler conditions to many a park and public space locally, however the conditions were good for running and encouraged many runners out to partake in the camaraderie, craic and convivial collective engagement, that are at the core of every Saturday ParkRun.
Worth a special mention this week are Matthew Carleton and Odhran Conal Rafferty, who were first finishers on their respective courses, and Colin McDowell, who was a second finisher. Also congratulations to Roisin Hughes and Natasha Henderson, who were first female finishers, as well as Alina Biskupska, who recorded a new PB on her course.
Well done to all those who participated, all the runners and especially the volunteers, without whom the events could not be staged.
