NBH Race Report 9th-15th may 2022

Slieve Donard, Phoenix Park, Woodburn Forest, Mary Peters track and Strabane/Lifford saw some great racing this week and fine performances by members of the North Belfast Harriers.

Woodburn Forest series Race 1: tue 10th may

It was good to see this popular series return on Tuesday evening in Woodburn Forest. The course started at Woodburn Road and descended to the Middle South Reservoir, athletes then completed a loop of the reservoir on a mix of grass and trail before heading back up the hill to the finish, for an overall race distance around 5km. Four NBH members took on the challenge with Mark McKinstry demonstrating his strength to take a fine win. The harrier’s results were:

Donard Race (sat 14th may)

Starting in Donard Park, the course took runners via the Glen River to the Mourne Wall at the saddle between Commedagh and Donard; from there they followed the wall to the summit of Donard before a steep descent, then joining the upward route again and finishing back at the start point. Two harriers took part, Martsje Hell and Philip Goss each winning their individual age categories.

Belfast Irish Milers Meet (Sat 14th May)

The sun shone at Mary Peters track on Saturday afternoon for the annual Irish Milers meeting, with several harriers contesting 1500m and 5000m races. John Black was first home in the 5000m ‘B’ race in 15:02.99. Full results were:

Strabane/Lifford Half marathon (Sun 15th may)

A large field of over 850 runners took on the popular cross-border half marathon. The relatively flat route started and finished in Strabane with runners also running through Lifford and Clady. Three harriers took part:

Irish 5k championships (Sun 15th)

Phoenix Park in Dublin was the setting for the Irish 5k championships on Sunday morning. Peter Donnelly achieved a fine 7th place overall in 15:39, while Davey Clarke retained his Irish championship in 16:55. Carol Clarke also had a fine run to place 3rd in the F55 category.

Saturday was a lovely morning for the local and not so local parkruns, with NBH athletes taking part at 15 different venues.
